We are honoured to welcome Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, as this year’s distinguished speaker. In his lecture, Human Rights: Cooling a Planet on Fire, Mr. Türk will address the critical intersection between climate change and human rights, exploring how international human rights frameworks can and must respond to today’s environmental crises.
A passionate advocate for universal human rights, Mr. Türk has dedicated his career to protecting vulnerable populations, particularly refugees. Prior to his current role, he served as Under-Secretary-General for Policy in the UN Secretary-General’s Executive Office and played a pivotal role in shaping the Global Compact on Refugees.
Mr. Türk holds a doctorate in international law from the University of Vienna and a Master of Laws from the University of Linz, Austria. He is also a widely published expert in refugee and human rights law.
