Week 4: Doing ethnographic fieldwork on "alternatives to punishment" in Berlin's youth justice system: On youth slang, carceral spaces and 7-minute interviews

DPhil student Leonie Thies will talk about her ethnographic fieldwork on "alternatives to punishment" in Berlin’s youth justice system. While she will briefly draw on her initial findings on punitiveness and practices of (non-)citizen-making, this session aims to invite discussions of methodology and the underbelly of fieldwork.  Leonie will reflect on field access and exit, power relations, not understanding youth slang, the ambivalences of the material spaces she worked in and the messiness of the aftermath of fieldwork.

As always, feel free to use the Centre facilities to make yourself a hot drink!
