Emma Chamberlain features as tax expert on BBC Radio 4 programme

Emma Chamberlain OBE, Visiting Professor in Taxation Law at the University of Oxford, has recently featured in BBC Radio 4's Too Long; Didn't Read providing expert insight into wealth tax.

In this satirical series presenter Catherine Bohart takes a humorous look at complex items in the news. In this episode the topic of conversation was wealth tax.

Emma Chamberlain was one of three Wealth Tax Commissioners who authored a December 2020 report examining whether a UK wealth tax is desirable and deliverable.

Speaking about this report on the programme, Emma said: 'We said a one-off wealth tax is not a bad way of raising quite a lot of money...There is a problem with that. I think now it would be very difficult to say we want a one off wealth tax when there is no political mandate for it.

She goes on to to suggest an alternative solution: ‘Don’t have a more complex annual wealth tax, instead try and improve our existing, not very good capital taxes….Then the case for an annual wealth tax would fall away.'

This episode, titled It's a taxing subject, was released on 1 August 2025 and is available on BBC Sounds until the end of August 2025.
