Alexander Hughes

Alex is a DPhil candidate at the Faculty of Law, supervised by Dr Shreya Atrey. His research explores the relationship between sexual violence and women’s expression, and is generously funded by a Judge Meron Graduate Scholarship (Trinity College and Faculty of Law). 

Alex is a Stipendiary Lecturer at St Edmund Hall, a Retained Lecturer at Trinity College, and a Non-Stipendiary Lecturer at Lady Margaret Hall. He has previously taught at Harris Manchester College and King’s College London. He also participates as a Graduate Tutor on the Opportunity Oxford programme.

Alex is a Graduate Resident at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights and co-convenes the Bonavero Graduate Research Forum. Alex has provided research assistance for several human rights projects, including for Dr Marija Javanovic at Oxford and Dr Stefan Theil at Cambridge.

Alex was previously the Judicial Assistant to Lord Sales at the UK Supreme Court and then the Head Judicial Assistant to the President, Lord Reed. Before that he worked at the European Court of Human Rights, first in the Office of the President and then as a Lawyer in the UK Division. Alex is a qualified solicitor (non-practising) and worked for several years at Latham & Watkins in London. 

He holds an LLB (First Class, top of year) from the University of Southampton, the BCL (Distinction) from the University of Oxford and an LLM from NYU School of Law.
