Arinne Fatum
Biography
Arinne Fatum is an MPhil candidate at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, supervised by Dr Fernanda Pirie. Her research examines sulha, the customary reconciliation process used to resolve disputes within Palestinian/Arab communities in Israel. She focuses on how sulha operates alongside, and in tension with, the Israeli state legal system, and what this reveals about legal authority, community governance and identity among Arab citizens of Israel.
Before joining the CSLS, Arinne studied Religion, Politics and Society at King’s College London, where she received the Trench Greek New Testament Prize.
Her undergraduate dissertation, State Education Policy and Sectarian Identity Among Druze Citizens in Israel, drew on Knesset debates, archival records and curriculum materials in Arabic and Hebrew. It argued that separate Arab curricula work as a governance tool that reinforces sectarian boundaries. She then completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Law and Professional Practice at King’s.
