Bhimraj Muthu

Bhimraj Muthu is currently pursuing a DPhil at the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford, as a Gopal Subramaniam Graduate Scholar at the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development (OICSD). He completed his MPhil in Law with distinction at Oxford as OICSD's Ratanshaw Bomanji Zaiwalla Scholar. He is the first Dalit scholar to receive either of these OICSD scholarships. His DPhil research examines how law perpetuates caste-based environmental injustice in North Chennai under the supervision of Professor Liz Fisher. 

 Bhimraj holds an LL.M. from South Asian University, New Delhi, and a B.A.B.L. (Hons.) from the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Chennai. Before joining Oxford, he taught international law at the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University. He has also qualified for the University Grants Commission Junior Research Fellowship and was selected for the Indian Equality Law Visiting Fellowship Programme, jointly organised by the University of Melbourne and the University of Oxford. 

 He is currently the President of the Oxford South Asian Ambedkar Forum, an anti-caste society at the University of Oxford that promotes marginalised voices from South Asia. His research interests include environmental law, anti-discrimination law, and international law. He has published articles on caste discrimination and international law in the International Journal on Minority and Group Rights (Brill | Nijhoff) and co-authored the Report on Judicial Conceptions of Caste published by the Supreme Court of India.
