Lars Breuls holds a Master’s degree in Criminology (Vrije Universiteit Brussels, 2015). His research interests include immigration detention, practices of prison sentence implementation, and detention experiences of and release procedures for foreign national prisoners. He holds a Ph.D. fellowship of the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) and is currently preparing a doctoral thesis with the provisional title “The point of (no) return? An ethnographic study of forced removal practices in immigration detention centres” (October 2016 – September 2020). Prior to obtaining the Ph.D. fellowship, he was already working as a researcher at the Criminology Department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussels on the study of decision-making processes with regard to recall to prison of conditionally released offenders (October 2015 – September 2016).
