Biography

Yussef received the PhD scholarship at the European University Institute in Florence in 2017. He studies the notion of identity and belonging in human rights law, combining legal and theoretical methodology. His research interests include human rights, social theory, (psychological) citizenship, sense of belonging, and the role of emotions in democracy. In 2019, he was a visiting researcher at New York University School of Law. Before the EUI, Yussef was a junior lecturer at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and worked with the Dutch State Attorney. He authored ‘Human Rights and the Excess of Identity: A Legal and Theoretical Inquiry into the Notion of Identity in Strasbourg Case Law’ in Social & Legal Studies.
