Oxford academics act as counsel in ICJ advisory proceedings

On 22 October 2025, the International Court of Justice in The Hague handed down its Advisory Opinion on the Obligations of Israel in relation to "the Presence and Activities of the United Nations, Other International Organizations and Third States in and in relation to the Occupied Palestinian Territory".

Professor Antonios Tzanakopoulos acted as counsel for Malaysia in the proceedings, and Dr Miles Jackson acted as counsel for Namibia.

The Court was responding to a request from the United Nations General Assembly seeking clarification on a range of questions of international law, including immunities of international organisations, humanitarian access, and the implications of the right of self-determination. Arguments were heard at the end of April this year.
