Webinar Series on International Human Rights Litigation Now Available Online

The Bonavero Institute of Human Rights is pleased to announce that recordings of the recent four-part webinar series hosted together with Matrix Chambers on International Human Rights Litigation: Frontiers and Challenges are now available online on our Watch and Listen pages. Co-organised by Professor Dr. Başak Çalı (Bonavero Institute) and Professor Philip Leach (Matrix Chambers) the series brought together leading legal practitioners and scholars to address some of the most pressing and complex challenges in contemporary international human rights litigation.

Spanning four one-hour sessions, the series explored critical themes from across the regional human rights systems—African, European, and Inter-American—as well as the United Nations Treaty Bodies. Each session fostered strategic dialogue and knowledge exchange, with a focus on substantive legal developments, procedural innovations, and emerging priorities in the field.

Session 1: Urgency and Human Rights

This session examined how human rights systems respond to urgent threats, focusing on interim measures issued by the European Court of Human Rights and practices of UN Treaty Bodies in asylum and migration contexts.

Session 2: Litigating Against Authoritarian Practices

Amid rising authoritarianism globally, this session considered how regional human rights mechanisms can be used strategically to protect human rights defenders, journalists, judges, and other at-risk individuals.

Session 3: Access to Justice – Tackling Discrimination

This session focused on developments in discrimination litigation, including recent case law from the European Court of Human Rights on violence against women and innovative approaches by UN Treaty Bodies in equality and anti-discrimination jurisprudence.

Session 4: Human Rights Remedies – Trends and Trajectories

The final session explored evolving remedies in human rights law, with particular emphasis on creative approaches in the Inter-American system and litigation strategies addressing the climate crisis.

The series attracted a global audience of legal professionals, academics, civil society representatives, and students from 36 countries.
