Biography

Emma is a first-year DPhil Candidate at the Centre for Criminology. Her project aims to provide the first empirical, qualitative account of the factors driving the custodial remand of women charged with minor offences in Ireland from a feminist, socio-legal perspective. Her project is supervised by Professor Rachel Condry and funded by the ESRC Grand Union Doctoral Training Partnership. Her research interests and experience centre on justice-involved women, bail and remand decision-making, pre-trial detention, and feminist criminology.

Emma holds an LL.B. from Trinity College Dublin (First Class Hons.) and MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Oxford (Distinction). She previously worked as a judicial assistant to the Supreme Court of Ireland, where she provided dedicated legal research assistance and served as a copy-editor of the Irish Judicial Studies Journal. She has also held research assistant positions with the International Protection and Human Trafficking Unit of the Irish Legal Aid Board and Penal Policy Unit of the Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice. She serves as the current Chairperson of the Board of YWCA Ireland, a non-profit gender justice organisation dedicated to combatting gender-based violence and developing leadership capabilities in young women across the island of Ireland.
