Mohammad Zayaan Asimi

Mohammad Zayaan Asimi is a DPhil candidate at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies at the University of Oxford. His research interests lie at the intersection of human rights law and technology. His doctoral research looks at internet shutdowns and online platform regulation in Kashmir. He is supervised by Professor Nicole Stremlau. He is a Rhodes Scholar (India & Oriel 2024). 

Zayaan also serves as an Editor for the Frontiers of Socio-Legal Studies Blog and a Co-Convenor of the Future of Technology and Society Discussion Group. He is a lawyer by training and enrolled in the Bar Council of Jammu and Kashmir. Prior to this, Zayaan completed his B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) degree at Gujarat National Law University, India where he was the Co-Convenor of the GNLU Student Research Development Council and the Head of Research at the GNLU Centre for Environment, Sustainability, and Climate Justice. 

He has worked with NGOs, research centres, and civil society organisations on different human rights projects that aim to increase access to justice. He volunteered at the Migration and Asylum Project (MAP) post the political turmoil in Afghanistan and assisted in drafting reopening applications for asylum seekers before the UNHCR. He has also contributed to reports on indiscriminate policing, internet policymaking, and assessment of science and technology policies.
