Yara Shahine-Gharable
Biography
Yara Shahine-Gharable's research examines how young Palestinian men in Yaffa experience and negotiate urban transformation, gentrification, and policing, exploring the intersections of race, masculinity, and criminalization in a minority-within-minority context. Her work investigates how structural and institutional pressures shape everyday practices, identities, and experiences of marginalization in a rapidly changing city. By combining ethnography, qualitative interviews, and participant observation, Yara’s research addresses critical gaps in understanding how racialization, urban governance, and gendered social dynamics converge in the lived realities of minority populations.
She wrote an opinion piece in 2021 for Haaretz - Not 'Clashes' or 'Riots': Here's What's Really Happening in Jaffa.
