The Bonavero Institute of Human Rights is pleased to invite you to the Trinity Term gathering of the human rights reading group. Our aim is to interrogate foundational questions about the idea of human rights by reading canonical texts authored by some of the most influential global thinkers and actors whose works have shaped the conceptual vocabulary of our political modernity as well as the potential and the limits of the idea of human rights. For our inaugural session we read Marx and Arendt and for our second we read Burke and Gandhi.
For this session, we will read Mary Wollstonecraft and Carol Pateman.
Participants can attend the reading group in person or via Zoom.
Trinity term readings:
Mary Wollstonecraft, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, available here (read 'Letter to Talleyrand Perigord', 'Introduction', and Chapter 1: ‘The Rights and Involved Duties of Mankind Considered’)
- Carol Pateman, The Sexual Contract, available here (read Chapter 1: Contracting In).
